Learn JyotishIf you’re new to Jyotish, this is the path I’d recommend. These are the books, teachers, and references that have had the biggest impact on my own learning journey. Every recommendation below is something I’ve personally studied or continue to use.
Harshna is my teacher, and I've had the privilege of learning the basics of Jyotish directly from her. Her teachings are rooted in the Vedas, and her understanding of the innate expressions of the planets is exceptional. She emphasizes the importance of yogas and dashas, the keys to understanding what is actually going on in a chart. As a millennial, she bridges ancient teaching with the world we live in today, making the tradition genuinely applicable to modern life.
I've been learning from Ryan's YouTube content for years. He offers a free 52-video Vedic astrology course covering all the fundamentals, a comprehensive resource for anyone starting out. Ryan has been practicing and teaching Vedic astrology for decades, and it shows: he is remarkably articulate and knowledgeable, especially when breaking down the nuances of putting all the pieces of a chart together. His understanding and emphasis on planetary strengths and dignities is like no other.
Komilla Sutton is a recognized authority in the field of Vedic astrology, having authored numerous books including work on the nakshatras, the lunar nodes, the panchanga, and the divisional charts, alongside decades of teaching, courses, and conferences worldwide. Her book on the nakshatras has given me a much deeper understanding of all 27 lunar mansions. The nakshatras are what truly set Vedic astrology apart: their mythology, and the way they color the expression of the planets, down to the padas and beyond.
My go-to for quick recaps, what I call "spark notes". When I need a fast refresher on the houses, zodiacs, or common beginner pitfalls, the articles here are written in a straightforward, easy-to-understand way that makes reviewing the fundamentals painless. A great complement to the deeper texts.

What is Jyotish?
Jyotish is traditionally described as the Eye of the Vedas.
Often translated as the science of light, it is one of the six Vedangas, the traditional disciplines associated with the Vedas. Its purpose is to understand time through the movements of the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars.
Rather than focusing on isolated meanings, Jyotish studies how various concepts work together. Grahas (planets), houses, rashis (signs), nakshatras, yogas, dashas, and divisional charts all contribute to understanding a birth chart.
Learning Jyotish is therefore less about memorizing interpretations and more about gradually internalizing a coherent system of thought.
What makes Vedic astrology different from Western astrology?
While both systems observe the same sky, Vedic astrology typically uses the sidereal zodiac rather than the tropical zodiac.
Vedic astrology also places strong emphasis on concepts such as nakshatras (lunar mansions), planetary periods (dashas), yogas, divisional charts (vargas), planetary strengths, and house lordships. Rather than interpreting placements in isolation, these techniques are synthesized together to understand the chart as a whole.
What’s the point of studying a birth chart?
At its heart, the study of astrology is about understanding oneself more deeply.
A birth chart is more than a collection of planetary positions. It is a framework for recognizing patterns, tendencies, strengths, challenges, and the unfolding of time.
Within the tradition of Jyotish, a birth chart is regarded as a snapshot of one’s karma at the moment of birth. Rather than predicting a fixed future, it provides a framework for understanding the tendencies, lessons, and opportunities through which life unfolds.
Is Vedic Astrology Studio a birth chart interpretation tool?
No. Vedic Astrology Studio is designed to help you learn how to interpret a birth chart yourself.
Most astrology software generates a chart and immediately presents generic interpretations. We take a different approach by bringing together the concepts, references, and study tools needed to help you read a chart on your own.
Is my birth data stored?
Not by default.
Every birth chart is generated entirely in your browser (client-side). Your birth details are never sent to our servers simply to calculate a chart.
If you choose to become a Studio Member, you may save birth details to your personal Study Library so you can reopen charts quickly. Even then, chart calculations continue to happen locally in your browser each time a chart is rendered. For more, read our Privacy Policy.
Why might results differ from another website?
Different astrology software may use different calculation settings.
Variations in the chosen ayanamsa, house system, rounding conventions, or implementation details can all produce slightly different charts.
Is Vedic Astrology Studio suitable for beginners?
Absolutely.
